The developmental pathway in professional football is divided into three stages: Grassroots (5-11 years), Youth (12-17 years), Professional (18+ years). Within these stages, alongside right mentorship, there are multiple competitions that help student-athletes rise through the ranks and eventually attain a professional contract.
The All India Football Federation, which is the governing body for football in India, launched Baby Leagues in 2018, a nation-wide project to provide initial competitive exposure for grassroots players. In the youth stage, the AIFF organizes Sub-Junior Nationals (U-14) and Junior Nationals (U-16 & U-19) across India. At the professional level, the AIFF organizes Senior National competitions, which becomes the gateway for footballers to kickstart their professional journey. Alongside the AIFF organized competitions, there are numerous tournaments arranged by private and state bodies across all age-categories.
Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools (BBFS) takes part in all competitions providing student-athletes the ideal platform to script their pathway into professional football while facilitating best training by seasoned coaches. BBFS also owns Garhwal Heroes Football Club (GHFC), a Delhi-based professional football team and has several partner teams across India. Student-athletes who have the potential and perform in competitions get an opportunity to represent BBFS partner clubs and are sent for trials in elite-teams through the BBFS scouting network across India and abroad.
BBFS strives to develop its student-athletes holistically and gives equal importance in sports and studies. According to the regulations set by the sports governing bodies in India, an athlete can sign a professional contract post age 18. So, once students complete class XII, and are eligible to play professionally, they can simultaneously pursue academics in a domain of their choice. For students above 18, BBFS has launched its U-23 Residential Academy program that enables student-athletes to pursue football with BBFS partner clubs. BBFS also provides scouting opportunities with reputed I-League and ISL based clubs.
If the student-athlete does not make it as a professional footballer, they can join the booming sports industry and work in various verticals within sports which includes sports management, coaching, fitness, nutrition, analytics, media etc. Apart from that, student-athletes always have the option to pursue a career in traditional fields like engineering, law, medicine, business and other fields upon completion of XIIth grade.
